Can You Build a Baseball Paradise? Lessons from Diamond Oaks Ranch
The SLIDE Podcast Show: Chris Shelton returns to talk about the first season of tournaments at Diamond Oaks Ranch.
Some of the best moments in youth baseball happen between games. In this episode of The SLIDE Podcast, Coach Aaron and Big E welcome back Chris Shelton, founder of Diamond Oaks Ranch, to look back on the ranch’s first full season of tournaments and what families experienced at this 182-acre Texas baseball resort.
One story says it all: a young player pedaled up to the dugout on a bike just minutes before first pitch, fresh from a morning of fishing. For Chris, that wasn’t a problem to fix. It was proof that Diamond Oaks Ranch is doing exactly what it was built to do: give kids room to compete and room to be kids.
And yes, the fishing is the real deal. Watch Chris’s son reel in a big bass right on the property.

At Diamond Oaks Ranch, tournament weekends go far beyond the field. Families can stay on site in cottages or the team bunkhouse, eat at the on-site restaurant, and fill the time between games with fishing, biking, the pool, pickleball, volleyball, disc golf, live music, and a Wiffle ball field. Players can also sharpen their swing in the indoor batting cages and HitTrax suite.
Chris also talks about the Ranchers free-agent program, which lets players sign up on their own and join a pickup team for the weekend. He has watched shy kids show up unsure of themselves and head home with new friends, more confidence, and stories they’ll be telling for years.
And the ranch is just getting started. Chris shares plans for more baseball fields, additional lodging, lacrosse events, and a possible GlowBall Nation tournament, all built around the same idea: a place where families stay together, kids play hard, and the weekend means more than the final score.
That’s what Diamond Oaks Ranch is all about: competitive baseball, unforgettable family weekends, and a place where kids still get to be kids.
